Class 7 and 8 are heavy-duty trucks used in waste management, junk hauling, utility work, demolition and construction. A dump truck is used for transporting loose material (such as sand, gravel, or demolition waste) for construction and environmental projects. A typical dump truck is equipped with an open-box bed, which is hinged at the rear and equipped with hydraulic rams to lift the front, allowing the material in the bed to be deposited (“dumped”) on the ground behind the truck at the site of delivery.

Automatic · Best
Our SuperShield comes with a heavy-duty 12-gauge steel housing, 1.3 HP electric motor, a full enclosure designed for daily-driver Class 8 dumps, and a 1-year warranty on moving parts.
Automatic · Better
The Steel Protector +™ Automatic Tarp System is designed for longer applications that require some protection from falling debris. The Steel Protector+ holds 28ft of tarp and works with all types of dump truck bodies. It includes a steel bolt-in spring shaft anchor, mounting brackets, tarp roller tube, system housing, arm pivots, 1.3 HP electric motor, and a smart switch kit.
Automatic · Good
The Core Automatic Tarp System is an economical, cut-to-fit electric tarping system that fits into the cab shield of most dump truck bodies. The Core System is great for applications where falling debris and loader damage is not a concern. It includes Core Diamond end plates, a 1.3 horsepower electric motor kit, and a 12V in-cab smart switch with all of the needed wires.
Final configuration depends on bed length, tarp material (Vinyl, HD Mesh, Super HD Mesh, Asphalt Vinyl), and mounting hardware. Configure each system for pricing on its product page.
Most Class 7-8 dumps run automatic because of cycle time and operator safety. Semi-auto is the right call when budget is the constraint and the truck cycles fewer times per day.
Default For Class 7-8
+
Cab-switch operation, so driver stays in seat
+
~10-15 second cycle, no climbing
+
Best operator safety + DOT compliance story
−
Higher upfront cost; requires cab wiring
Best for: Fleet trucks running 5+ cycles/day, hot-mix asphalt, regulated jurisdictions.
Budget Pick
+
Spring-assisted, no electric required
+
Lower upfront cost, simpler service
+
Still ground-operated, so no climbing the bed
−
Manual pull for slower cycles, requires more operator effort
Best for: 1-3 cycles/day, owner-operators, no-electric trucks.

Compliance
Federal rule plus a state-by-state breakdown of dump truck tarping laws.
Questions buyers ask about tarping Class 7 – 8 dump trucks. Real queries from the field.
Yes, federal regulation 49 CFR § 393.100 requires secure cargo on all commercial vehicles, and every U.S. state has additional rules specific to dump trucks. If you’re hauling aggregate, asphalt, dirt, or debris, you need to tarp it. Coverage requirements vary state-to-state, see our state-by-state guide.
Measure your bed length and width, then add 12 – 18 inches in each direction for rolling and side coverage. Most Class 7-8 dumps use a 14′ × 84″ or 16′ × 84″ tarp. Tandems and Super 10s typically run 18′ × 88″ or 20′ × 88″. The configurator will spec the exact size when you enter your bed dimensions.
A trained installer typically completes a Class 7-8 automatic system in 4 – 6 hours, including cab wiring and final test. Semi-automatic installs are faster (2 – 3 hours) since there’s no electrical run. Use the installer locator to find a shop that can fit you in.
Pulltarps® Tension Spring, Torque Block, Ratchet Mechanism, and End Cap components of Pulltarps® branded pullout type tarping systems carries a 1 year limited warranty. Moving parts for Pulltarps® branded Automatic Arm Systems also carry a 1 year limited warranty. Pulltarps branded motors carry either a 5 year (517-5909), or a 1 year (517-1909) limited warranty.
Asphalt Vinyl is designed for hot-mix operations, whereas HD Mesh, Super HD Mesh, & Vinyl fare better in demolition, aggregate, junk removal and scrap metal hauling.
Read the full warranty terms.
Most Class 7 dumps run 2 axles (single rear axle). Most Class 8 dumps run 3 axles (tandem rear). Super 10s have 5 axles total — the 3 drive axles plus 2 lift axles that lower under load. Super Duty and tag-axle rigs can run 4 – 6 axles. All Pulltarps automatic systems fit any axle count.
Asphalt Vinyl is the heat-resistant option built for hot-mix operations. Standard Vinyl will work for occasional asphalt but degrades faster under sustained heat. HD Mesh and Super HD Mesh aren’t recommended for asphalt, but work for aggregate, debris, and dry materials. Shop Asphalt Vinyl tarps →
Yes, but for Class 7-8 automatic systems we strongly recommend an authorized installer. Cab wiring and proper housing mount are critical for warranty coverage and reliability. EZ-Fit kits (for lighter trucks) are designed for owner installation; full automatic systems are best left to a shop. Call 1-800-368-3075 if you’re set on self-installing — we’ll walk you through it.
